Short answer: yes, it works fine on its own. The Aeroccino 3 doesn’t connect to a coffee machine or need a capsule. It’s a jug that heats and froths milk, and it doesn’t care whether that milk ends up on a Nespresso shot, a cafetière coffee, a mug of instant or a hot chocolate.

The more useful question is whether it’s worth having over a cheap handheld whisk, and that comes down to how you drink your hot drinks in winter.

What it actually does

From the Nespresso Aeroccino 3 listing on Amazon UK:

  • Three settings: hot milk foam, plain hot milk, and cold froth
  • One button. Press it and walk away
  • It switches itself off when the milk’s done
  • Non-stick inside, so milk doesn’t bake onto the bottom

Nespresso’s own listing for the same model puts the capacity at about 120ml when you’re making foam and 240ml for hot milk. That’s one big latte, or two small cappuccinos. It’s not a jug for a family of four.

Why it beats a handheld frother

A battery whisk froths milk, but you have to heat the milk first, either in a pan or the microwave, and you’re stood there holding it. The Aeroccino does the heating and the frothing together, and it stops at the right temperature. You put the kettle on, press the button, and by the time your coffee’s ready, so is the milk.

That matters more in winter than people expect. On a cold, dark morning, the difference between “proper latte” and “can’t be bothered” is usually one extra step.

It’s also good for hot chocolate. Mix the powder into a splash of hot water in the mug, then pour the frothed milk over the top. Don’t put the powder in the jug itself: Nespresso’s instructions say milk only, as anything else can burn onto the base or clog the whisk.

The catches

  • It isn’t cheap. For the same money you could buy a handheld frother and several months of good coffee. You’re paying for the convenience and the brand.
  • Hand wash only. The jug sits on a powered base and shouldn’t go in the dishwasher or be dunked in water. A rinse and a wipe straight after use is enough, but you do have to do it.
  • Small batches. If two people want big milky drinks at the same time, you’ll be running it twice.
  • Check the listing. There are a few Aeroccino listings on Amazon UK from different sellers, so make sure the one you pick is the UK plug version.

So, is it worth it?

If you make one or two milky drinks a day and you’re tired of microwaving milk, I think it’s one of the few coffee gadgets you’ll actually use every single day. If you only want froth now and then, a handheld whisk is fine. We’ve looked at the Powerlix handheld frother before. And if you mostly drink oat milk, it’s worth reading our take on the Dualit Milk Frother Max, which holds more.
