You buy a bunch on Sunday, they’re perfect on Tuesday, and by Thursday there are brown patches spreading from wherever they were lying against the fruit bowl. It happens so reliably that plenty of us just accept banana bread as a weekly obligation.
Some of that browning is just bananas ripening, and nothing on a worktop will stop it. But a good share of the ugly patches are bruises, and those you can do something about.
Why the fruit bowl makes it worse
A banana sitting in a bowl rests its whole weight on one side, usually on top of an apple or another banana. That pressure point is where the dark soft patch shows up first. Pile more fruit on top and it gets worse. Bananas are also known for giving off ethylene, the gas that speeds up ripening, so keeping them crammed in with other fruit tends to hurry everything along at once.
Hanging them takes the pressure off. Nothing is touching the skin except the stem at the top, and air can get all the way round the bunch.
A stand with a hook
The Totally Bamboo Banana Holder is about as simple as these get: a round bamboo base, a curved upright, and a stainless steel hook that the bunch hangs from. It’s made from Moso bamboo, stands 11 inches high on a 7 inch base, and the hook is rated for 4.4 lb (roughly 2kg). A normal supermarket bunch is nowhere near that.
The small footprint is the selling point compared with the bigger fruit-bowl-with-a-hook combos. It fits in the corner next to the kettle and doesn’t need to be cleared off when you’re wiping down. Setup is just slotting the hook in, and the bamboo wants a wipe with a damp cloth and a dry, not a soak in the sink.
What it won’t do
It won’t freeze time. Hang a ripe bunch and it’ll still be spotty in a few days, just without the squashed side. If your problem is that you buy too many, buying fewer is the cheaper fix. And if you’ve got a really curved bunch, it can swing round and nudge the upright, so turn it so the curve faces away.
One more tip while we’re here: once they hit the spotty stage you’re happy with, peel them, slice them and freeze them for smoothies. Between that and the hook, far fewer end up in the food bin. You can see the Totally Bamboo holder on Amazon.
