A cheap garlic press turns a ten-second job into a small fight. You squeeze as hard as you can, half the clove stays stuck in the holes instead of coming out the other side, and then you’re stuck digging pulp out of tiny mesh with a toothpick while your hand aches. It puts a lot of people off using fresh garlic at all.

The OXO Good Grips Garlic Press is built to avoid most of that. It’s die-cast zinc rather than the thin stamped metal a lot of budget presses use, so there’s less flex when you squeeze and less chance of the hinge wearing loose after a few months. The chamber is large enough to fit multiple cloves at once, which matters if you’re cooking for more than one person and don’t want to reload it three times.

The part that actually saves the most hassle is the built-in cleaner, a plate that pushes back through the mesh from the other side and knocks out the leftover pulp and skin in one motion. No more reaching for a toothpick or running it under the tap while poking at every hole individually. The handles are soft and non-slip too, so the squeeze itself takes noticeably less effort than it does with an all-metal press.

It’s dishwasher safe once you’re done, and because the cleaning plate does most of the work by hand anyway, it rarely goes in dirty enough to need a full cycle just for this one tool.

If garlic presses have put you off using fresh cloves in favour of the jarred stuff, this is worth trying before you give up on fresh garlic altogether.
