If you bake your own bread, you already know the problem. A beautiful loaf comes out of the oven, and then you saw it into wedges that are thick at one end and thin enough to read through at the other. A slicing guide fixes that, and I think it is one of those small tools that is genuinely worth the drawer space.

How it works

The Kiss Core adjustable bread slicer is a folding guide with slots on either side. You rest the loaf in the middle, slide the knife down through a pair of slots and keep it vertical. The slots give a uniform slice of about 1.2 cm (0.47 inches) and cuts right down to the bottom of the loaf.

Build and design

  • The width adjusts, so it copes with different loaf sizes, including taller breads and 2 lb bread machine loaves.
  • It is moulded from heat-resistant PP plastic (the Amazon page says so, so it is not bamboo) and folds flat for storage.
  • There is a crumb tray built in, which saves wiping down the counter afterwards.

Who it suits

Anyone doing sandwiches, toast or bread for kids will get the most from it. Even slices toast evenly, which is the quiet payoff. Pair it with a long serrated knife, since the guide holds the angle but the knife still has to do the cutting.

If you buy bread pre-sliced, skip it. If you bake sourdough or use a bread machine, it is a small, sensible buy that stops the loaf being hacked about.
